Newsletter 1 – August is a month of beginnings
It is with this jubilant warrior-spirit that we launch the Valerie J. Maynard Foundation newsletter, a place to connect with the life and legacy of this fierce artist, activist and teacher as it reverberates from her home in Baltimore and across the planet. May this site of virtual exchange always hold fast to the Black August pillars of culture, community and education that held up Valerie Maynard’s sky.

Multidisciplinary artist, archivist, and culture worker MacKenzie River Foy served as Valerie J. Maynard Legacy Intern in 2023–24, in the inaugural cohort of the collaborative internship program created by the Valerie J. Maynard Foundation and the Baltimore Museum of Art. The internship honors artist Valerie J. Maynard (1937–2022; pictured above), a pioneering member of the Black Arts Movement and beloved icon of the Baltimore arts community, whose multidecade practice engaged with the complexity of Black identity and experience.
Helen Frankenthaler Foundation Announces 2025 Frankenthaler Climate Initiative Grantees and commits to a five-year extension of its program

Maynard Foundation is honored to have been selected to receive an award through the Frankenthaler Climate Initiative, a grantmaking program established by the Helen Frankenthaler Foundation in collaboration with Environment & Culture Partners and RMI to catalyze climate action in the visual arts.
