Valerie Maynard was known for her unflinching social commentary. As a key figure in the Black Arts movement, it was second nature for her to express the pain she witnessed through the art she created. It wasn’t until the 70s that Maynard found herself embroiled in a systemic fight that gave shape to the inexorable force of her work.
