The Valerie J. Maynard Legacy Internship

The Valerie J. Maynard Legacy Internship was established  to honor the legacy and vision of the artist who was a pioneering member of the Black Arts Movement, and a beloved icon of the Baltimore arts community (and beyond). It is a unique opportunity that provides interns with essential skills to support legacy work. Over the course of their tenure participants acquire tools to effectively manage, document and care for a collection of art artifacts, ephemera and various archival materials. Currently, the VJMF training modules have a strong emphasis on inventorying, cataloging, digitization, art handling, preservation and oral histories.

The internship operates in two formats:

Summer Intensive

The Summer Intensive runs for approximately nine weeks in collaboration with several institutional partners. Interns work primarily onsite at the foundation with enrichment opportunities with local cultural partners scheduled throughout the summer.

One Year Cycle

The one year cycle is a special partnership with the Baltimore Museum of Art (BMA). Over the course of a year the interns split their time between the foundation and the BMA. They get the rare experience of engaging with two vastly different institutions in terms of scale, mission and learning opportunities. This unique exchange provides interns with the opportunity to learn and gain experience in the museum field and in a private collection setting.
